Welcome to CTS Transcription Services.
My name is Diane Cantrell and I have done online transcription from my home since 2007.

So Just “What Is Transcription?”

Transcription simply means listening to audio or written files and typing them into documents according to your own or the author’s desired standards. Some different types of documents to transcribe include but are not limited to handwritten papers, voice-recorded files, spreadsheets, database programs, and mailing lists. Usually if you're working for online transcription companies, you will be transcribing mainly voice-recorded audio files into formats the company specifies for you.

In a transcription business you will be typing documents for your clients or online transcription companies. To be truly successful in your transcription business the following should be your Code of Ethics:

  • Fast Turnaround

  • Excellent Grammar

  • Absolutely No Typographical Errors

  • Professional Image (if you run your own business)

  • Reasonable Rates (if you run your own business)

  • Quality Equipment

By embracing the above qualities you are sure to create a rewarding career in transcription!

There are basically three different types of transcription work to choose from which include Business Transcription, Legal Transcription, and Medical Transcription. Obviously, for legal and medical transcription you will need some type of training and/or experience in these fields.

At the time of this writing, medical transcription is by far the most popular type of at home transcription work done, as most doctors use dictation as their preferred way of note-taking and recording of their patients’ medical histories. There are many quality medical transcription courses available whether you choose a local college or via the Internet. Check out the Resources section for some options.

Legal transcription is definitely a viable option if you have worked as a legal secretary or in a legal office of some capacity and are familiar with the very strict formatting guidelines and legal terminology you will encounter. However, there are courses you can take for this as well.

General and Business transcription is much more flexible. The online transcription companies I work for are both general transcription, which means I transcribe any number of different topics, ranging from focus groups to single speaker files, from sermons to police interrogations! Very exciting stuff!

I enjoy the flexibility and freedom that this type of business offers me. As long as the work is done with quick turnaround or before the transcription company's deadline, you are free to complete it whenever you choose. The only exception to this is that some online companies have you set a schedule with them and you must be available during those times, but you're making your own schedule anyway, so there's still some freedom there. It is empowering to earn money from your own business and exciting to watch it blossom!
